Diet details
Diet recommendations are different for different patients. It all depends on the individual situation of the patient.
A few crucial points that you should be extra careful to follow during each step of the diet are as follows:
- Drink 2 liters of fluids or water every day; it prevents dehydration.
- Drink liquid or water between a meal. However, don’t drink water while eating the meal. It will have adverse effects on your recovery process.
- Don’t gulp down food. Instead, avoid this habit altogether, rather drink and eat slowly to allow time for your stomach to adjust to the incoming food.
Stage 1: Liquids
After the gastric bypass surgery, you’ll be recommended to drink light and clear liquids, such as water or coconut water. Once your stomach has handled these liquids, you could move to other heavier liquids, like:
- Popsicles
- Milk
- Decaffeinated coffee to tea
- Unsweetened juice
- And, broth
Stage 2: Puree food
After 1 week of a liquid-only diet, you will advance towards eating mashed up or pureed and strained food. The food should be in a thick liquid form, or it must have a soft paste-like consistency. Select foods that can be made into a paste easily, such as:
- Cream soups
- Cooked vegetables and soft fruits
- Cooked cereal
- Scrambled eggs that are softened
- You can even blend your solid food with certain liquids, such as:
- Broth
- Skim milk
- Sugar-free juice
- Water
Stage 3: Soft foods
After you’ve tolerated puree food for some weeks, your doctor will examine your condition and then will give the go-ahead to add soft solid foods into your daily eating routine. Include soft foods such as:
- Skinned cooked vegetables
- Soft or canned fruits, without skin and seeds
- Rice
- Dried or cooked cereal
- Cottage cheese
- Eggs
- Flaked rice
- Poultry or ground meat
Stage 4: Solid food
After approximately 8 weeks of the special diet, the doctor will allow you to gradually eat more solid foods. You can start with 3 meals per day. Wherein each meal must consist of half or 1 cup of solid food. However, do not fill up your stomach completely. You must stop just before being full. Particular foods may cause vomiting, pain or nausea.
