Lap Band is approved by The Food and Drug Administration for obese patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 kgs and higher. Lap band surgery candidates must have 45 kgs over ideal body weight, along with medical conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. It is discouraged when the patient is emotionally unstable or dependent on alcohol and drugs. People with gastrointestinal problems, lung and heart issues, higher BMI and more are further discouraged.

It is minimally invasive, doesn’t require intestinal routing (no stapling or cutting the stomach wall), reduces hospital recovery and pain and has a low risk of nutritional deficiencies. In addition, due to the adjustable band, the surgeon customises the amount of wood to retain without additional surgery, is approved during pregnancy and is removable – the stomach returns to its original form.

Before the surgery, the patient must have six small meals a day and avoid high-calorie food like milkshakes and ice cream. Then, the procedure is performed under complete general anaesthesia using the laparoscopic technique. It takes two hours to attach the gastric band around the upper part of the stomach and secure it with sutures. Next, the port is placed on the abdominal wall and sutured.
